Press releases are a vital tool to increase exposure for Chase and Charla, as well as for increasing the exposure of any potential sponsors. Included is a press release written for Chase and Charla's attempt to win the Outside Adventure Grant from Outside Magazine; Outside Magazine selected them as one of the five finalists, and they finished as runners up in a Facebook voting contest to choose the winner.
This press release resulted in publication in the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman, a newspaper with 7,000 readers: Alaskans selected as finalists for 'Adventure Grant'
This press release also resulted in a radio interview on KTNA, who subsequently published an article and audio clips from the interview on their website. KTNA has over 2,000 people in their listening area. Check it out: Talkeetna Resident a finalist for dream Thailand vacation
ALASKAN SELECTED AS FINALIST FOR ADVENTURE GRANT
Outside Magazine is celebrating their 35th anniversary by offering a $10,000 Adventure Grant, sponsoring the grant-winner for an adventure of their choice, and they’ve chosen an Alaskan as one of their finalists. Chase Berenson, 27 years old, who spends his summers in Talkeetna and his winters in Girdwood, has been selected as a finalist for his idea of traveling around Thailand in a tuk-tuk and participating in a wide variety of outside adventures along their journey. Along with his girlfriend Charla Hughes, 26 years old of Tallahassee, Florida, Berenson plans to travel through Thailand in the small 3-wheeled taxi vehicle stopping to hike, climb, dive, surf, mountain bike, and more.
Berenson and Hughes are both consummate travelers and adventurers. Berenson spends his summers in Talkeetna working for an airline with a fleet of skiplanes that flies mountain climber and expedition support in the Alaska Range and works in the winter at Alyeska Resort; Hughes is a PADI Divemaster and has worked in the past as a SCUBA diving guide before returning to school for her masters’ degree. They applied for the adventure grant recently during a trip to Laos, where they wrote the essay and produced the two-minute-long video required for the application. Putting everything together using an old netbook and a digital camera set to video mode, followed by a six-hour upload time on less-than-reliable internet, they managed to get their application submitted. The editors of Outside Magazine selected Berenson and Hughes as one of five finalists, based equally on the creativity, ambition, and feasibility of the adventure. After deciding on the five finalists, Outside Magazine has posted all five finalists and their videos on the Outside Magazine Facebook page for the general public to select who gets to receive the $10,000 Adventure Grant and to participate in their adventure between now and June 17th.
