Alligator Point, Florida
Monday, September 10th
Saint George Island is undeniably one of the best beaches around, but it certainly isn't one of the closest. After checking out Saint George, it was time to explore some closer beaches. Chase had heard of Alligator Point, and Charla had been there once years ago, so they decided to go see what this nearer beach is like.
Alligator Point is a small community on the aptly named Alligator Point Sand Spit, a spit that separates the Gulf of Mexico from Alligator Harbor. Despite the name, there weren't any alligators in attendance, but there was plenty of wildlife. Pelicans abound at Alligator Point, frequently diving into the water to go on fishing trips, and crabs were blanketing the beaches. Oddly enough the sand was covered in turtle grass (a type of sea grass), but there was still plenty of sand to enjoy. While exploring the beach, Charla and Chase also found an old pier to climb on. Starting a few years ago, piers were deemed uninsurable; when a hurricane destroys a pier, the insurance company won't reimburse the owner for rebuilding. Because of that, abandoned and destroyed piers are not a totally uncommon sight on Gulf Coast beaches. Again, another great day of beach exploration was cut short by the setting sun; however, Charla and Chase will probably return to this nice beach near to the city.
